The Bar Library, Belfast - Northern Ireland

This high profile inner city building houses the Bar Library. The challenge was to bring stonework to a building of contemporary design and create natural textures and muted colours. The scheme kept changing to include more stone and four grades of Portland stone are worked into its surfaces. The top−stone, normally rejected in favour of material from deeper beds in the quarry, being used to line the formal stair that facilitates access to a gallery overlooking the foyer. Roach, with its extensive fossil defination, has been used for a feature wall. Portland Blue and the Whitbed on the stairs are ploished where they are intended to be touched.
